1. BEFORE RUNNING SERVERMAGIC
-----------------------------

  A. Back Up Your System!
  -----------------------
Don't forget to back up your hard drives before using
ServerMagic. While this version of ServerMagic has been
thoroughly tested and is quite safe, power failures,
operating system bugs, and hardware design bugs can put your
data at risk. No software program, including ServerMagic, is
  perfect.

BEFORE USING ANY UTILITY THAT MAKES SUCH EXTENSIVE CHANGES
TO YOUR HARD DRIVE, YOU SHOULD BACK UP YOUR DATA!

To back up your system, we recommend using PowerQuest's
Drive Image(R) or Drive Image Pro. Drive Image is a state-of-
the-art disk-imaging tool that allows you to create an image
of your entire system (an exact sector-for-sector copy) that
can easily be restored. This allows you to run ServerMagic
with the security of knowing that you can get your system
back up and running quickly if you run into problems.

  B. Check for Partition Errors before Making Changes
  ---------------------------------------------------
From ServerMagic, run Operations > Check on all partitions
that you plan to manipulate. Although ServerMagic checks
partitions for errors and can repair minor problems, more
serious errors cause ServerMagic to abruptly end an
operation. Check can find and fix most common errors.

NOTE: Check is not available on the NT boot partition due to
constant open files. For this partition, you should run
Operations > NT CheckDisk. If errors are found, run CHKDSK /F
from a command prompt to fix them before running ServerMagic.

2. KNOWN ISSUES
---------------

  A. NT's Disk Administrator and ServerMagic
  ------------------------------------------
While ServerMagic is running, you should not attempt to run
Disk Administrator. Both programs require exclusive access
to disk drives and will not run concurrently.

  B. Moving/Resizing the NT System Partition
  ------------------------------------------
Resizing the NT system partition larger than 7.8 GB or
moving this partition past the 1024 cylinder boundary will
cause your NT Server installation to become unbootable.
Warnings against such actions are provided within the
Resize/Move Partition dialog box in the Information area
("This partition crosses the 1024 cylinder boundary and may
not be bootable" and "This partition starts beyond the 1024
cylinder boundary and will not be bootable").

If you decide to proceed anyway with such a resize or
move and your server becomes unbootable, you can use the
rescue diskettes to manipulate the partition back to a
bootable state if the drive supports full Int13 calls from
DOS. If the drive does not support full Int13 calls from
DOS, such as the case with some SCSI-based RAID cards, you
will not be able to use the rescue diskettes. The only way
to recover from this scenario is to perform one of the
  following steps:

  * Install NT with the appropriate drivers (if necessary)
and Service Pack onto another device attached to the server,
then use ServerMagic to manipulate the problem NT system
partition back to a bootable state.

     OR

  * Attach the drive to another NT Server installation,
install the appropriate drivers (if necessary) and Service
Pack, and then use ServerMagic to manipulate the problem NT
system partition back to a bootable state.

For more information regarding the NT system partition size
limitation, please refer to Microsoft Knowledge Base article
Q224526, "Windows NT 4.0 Supports Maximum of 7.8-GB System
  Partition."

  C. Running ServerMagic on Compressed NTFS Partitions
  ----------------------------------------------------
Although ServerMagic supports the manipulation of compressed
NTFS partitions, you may notice a marked speed difference
between compressed and non-compressed partitions. For best
performance, you may want to decompress compressed NTFS
  partitions before using ServerMagic.

  D. Exception Handling During Boot Mode
  --------------------------------------
ServerMagic checks partitions it is scheduled to manipulate
for errors before changing data. Most errors can be fixed
automatically. On rare occasions, an exception error is found
in boot mode, indicating a problem was found with partition
structures that ServerMagic could not repair. When such
exceptions are found, ServerMagic will prompt you for a blank
formatted floppy disk and will write necessary information
about the exception to the floppy. Please contact PowerQuest
Technical Support in this situation, and be prepared to
forward the file on the floppy to PowerQuest for further
  analysis.

  E. Installing ServerMagic on Terminal Server with ZAK
  -----------------------------------------------------
When the ServerMagic CD is inserted into the drive,
BROWSECD.EXE normally runs. This application provides an
easy way to install ServerMagic, create rescue diskettes,
and view and install PDF documentation. On NT Terminal
Server in which Microsoft Zero Administration Kit (ZAK) is
applied, BROWSECD.EXE does not run. To install ServerMagic
under these circumstances, find the \NT\EN\Setup directory
on the ServerMagic CD and run SETUP.EXE. Rescue diskettes
can be created during the install process (highly
recommended) and from an icon in the ServerMagic program
group once installation has completed. The full
functionality of BROWSECD.EXE, less the actual installation
of ServerMagic, can be realized by placing the CD into any
other Windows 9x or NT 4.0 machine.

3. MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
------------------------------

  ServerMagic for Windows NT
  --------------------------
  - 12 MB free hard drive space
  - 16 MB of RAM
  - Windows NT 4.0 Server with at least SP4 applied
  - VGA compatible display
  - Intel/486 DX or later (33 MHz)
  - 4x CD-ROM drive
  - 3.5" Floppy (High-density)

  DOS GUI/Character Mode
  ----------------------
  - 6 MB free hard drive space
  - 8 MB of RAM (16 MB for ServerMagic to operate on NTFS
partitions, 32 MB recommended for ServerMagic to operate
    on FAT32 partitions)
  - MS-DOS 5.0 (6.2 or later recommended) or compatible
  - VGA compatible display
  - 486 DX or later (33 MHz)
  - 4x CD-ROM drive
  - 3.5" Floppy (High-density)

4. GENERAL USAGE NOTES
----------------------

  - If you run ServerMagic from DOS, turn off third-party disk
caches. Deactivate or unload any TSR programs that access
or modify the partitions being changed. Do not run
    ServerMagic from a compressed drive.

  - This release of ServerMagic handles ASCII filenames.
ServerMagic does not yet handle double-byte character sets
such as Japanese, resulting in two known limitations: (1)
Converting a partition from FAT to HPFS can produce
incorrectly translated filenames. (2) An attempt to
specify or set the volume label may fail.

  - Progress bars are an estimation only and can pause for
several minutes, even though ServerMagic is still working
correctly. If you think your computer has locked up,
please be patient and ServerMagic will finish the
    operation.
